I’ve got to be honest, at first, this diet sounded rather weird to me, when I think ‘residue’ I think of an old spaghetti sauce stain on the stove.

The low residue diet is meant to reduce the amount of residue left in the digestive tract after digestion.

This might sound gross, but if you think about it, it makes sense.

You just can’t imagine anything left in the digestive tract to be a good thing!


What Is This Residue??

The residue mentioned in the low residue diet menu is undigested food left in the GI tract.

This residue refers to dietary fiber that resists digestion according to GIcare.com.


Residue Playing Into IBS

While it isn’t crucial to restrict your fiber intake with IBS, it may help!

Fiber may actually be a great thing in some instances of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but not others.

It really comes down to your own situation.

If you suspect fiber to be harmful instead of helpful, it’s time to consult your doctor.


Should You Use This Diet Or Skip It?

Those with IBS C (constipation) will most likely want to overlook this diet, as high fiber helps with constipation.

Those with IBS D (diarrhea), especially during flare ups, could benefit from a low fiber diet!

The low residue diet makes a perfect IBS D food list to follow.

Talk to your doctor to determine if this would be a good option for you!

I suffer mostly from IBS-D, so this would make a great option for me during IBS-D flare ups!

This diet only restricts certain foods and limits the amounts of some others.

Grains such as whole grains and bran are cut out of this menu.

UPMC shares a great tip on this diet for us: “Foods high in soluble fibers (like oats, peas, and beans) have been shown to ease both constipation and diarrhea.”
