In short, this is a very low-carb diet or you can completely cut out carbs all together.

How Does This Keto IBS Diet Work
Essentially, this diet puts your body into Ketosis, a state where Ketones are produced from fat in the body. This occurs when glucose supply is low in the body.
Low or no carbs will help get your body to the state of Ketosis. Ketones are broken down into blood sugar. Ketones are then used as fuel for the body.
Fats make up most of your daily macros, followed by protein. The carbohydrate intake remains low on this diet.
Ketosis is great for weight loss because it utilizes fat stored in the body for energy, the state of Ketosis also has many more benefits for great health.
A Word Of Caution
While trying a Ketogenic diet for IBS may be great, it’s not for everyone.
This diet can potentially be harmful to diabetics on medication/insulin, those who take medication for high blood pressure or women who are breastfeeding.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that these folks can’t use this diet, but with certain circumstances, you have to observe your diet much more closely or skip this diet if it doesn’t suit your needs.
Consult your doctor, nutritionist, dietitian, etc before jumping into a Keto diet, but don’t be afraid for a second opinion, you’ll be surprised what people will tell you about the Keto diet.
So many professionals out there are still preaching the food pyramid, a basic diet concept that was paid for by food companies and is not healthy at all!
There’s also this idea that without carbs you cannot survive. This is not true, but you have to pay attention to the nutrients you’re getting and being sure not to miss out on any essential vitamins and nutrients.
This diet may also be a bad idea for some cases of IBS, it depends upon many factors, including the type of IBS you have.
There are tons of options beyond the Ketogenic diet for IBS, but this is a great option for many of us.
I mean, it would be pretty cool to call myself a fat-burning machine!
Utilize Natural Ketosis Diet For Irritable Bowel Syndrome
I’ve talked a lot and I mean a LOT on this blog about a low FODMAP diet which restricts CERTAIN carbs that are hard to digest.
The Ketogenic diet for IBS will be very low carb, which naturally cuts out most of those FODMAP carbs, making the digestion process easier.
However, if you have IBS C (constipation) this could be a very bad diet choice as your risk for constipation increases on the Keto diet.
You could try adjusting fiber intake on this diet.
The Keto diet helps cut down on your risk for diarrhea, gas and bloating as well as heartburn.
So if you have IBS-D, this could be the diet for you.
To your left, you’ll see a photo of Ketone testing strips. While these seem to be great for testing on your Ketogenic diet, don’t be fooled.
This is a horribly inaccurate way to track Ketosis.
The strips require a urine sample and while that may contain Ketones, your body may not, as you’ve just gotten them out of your body.

As I mentioned earlier, this diet is not for everyone. But great for most!
You have several options of diets that can help IBS symptoms and this is one of them.
I recommend reading up on different diets, including the Ketogenic diet for IBS.
You can choose whichever works best for you and your lifestyle.
A Keto IBS diet works great under certain circumstances like those with IBS-D.
I would not recommend the Ketogenic diet constipation treatment idea, because it can worsen constipation.
I also want to stress the importance of multiple opinions and places of research.
You will hear so many different ideas about the Ketogenic diet for IBS, some of it is totally untrue and that’s where you need to be careful.
Since much of society is used to high carb diets, you are going to hear a lot of backlash about Ketogenic diets.
Like apparently eating no carbs will make the world end!! Totally fine to do for most people, but please PLEASE do plenty of research. 🙂
The concept is so new to our mainstream society, so I can’t say that I’m surprised with the variety of opinions.
But you just can’t kick something til you learn about it or try it out.

While a Ketogenic diet for IBS can be very healthy and a good thing, there are a couple of things you’ll want to monitor.
I highly recommend multivitamins, as there are a few things beginners lack in their diet.
Let’s face it though, MANY of us are lacking some good old fashioned vitamins.
You may need to adjust your potassium, salt, and magnesium intake as well.
Salt is going to provide you with electrolytes. We need those, lots of those babies!
Here are some great options to ensure you’re getting all of the vitamins you need.
Half Salt is awesome because you can get both Electrolytes and Potassium from it, also a great money-saver!
Of course, multivitamins are a great source for essential nutrients.
