Once upon a time, IBS and dairy met, and boy did they want vengeance on each other.
There’s nothing like a cold glass of milk with home made cookies, creamy mac and cheese, or a nice thick milkshake.
I used to be convinced that dairy was the ultimate food group, it’s my absolute favorite!
Irritable Bowel Syndrome will say otherwise, in this disorder’s eyes, dairy is the enemy!
Although, in some cases, there are folks that don’t have an issue between IBS and dairy, but it’s slim.
Does IBS and Lactose Intolerance Relate?
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “Approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy”.
If you’re lactose intolerant, your body cannot break down lactose during digestion.
This is typically done by an enzyme in our bodies called lactase.
If dairy irritates your IBS, it’s not the dairy you can’t digest, it’s simply a trigger food that aggravates the intestines.
If you’re unsure whether you are suffering from lactose intolerance or if dairy poses as an IBS trigger food, you can be tested for lactose intolerance.
But in most cases, dairy makes it to our IBS trigger foods list either way.
While your diet (or a specific food) doesn’t directly cause IBS, some foods will trigger worse symptoms, dairy being a popular one.
Lactose intolerance is not directly related to IBS.
Trigger or Intolerance?
As I mentioned above, lactose intolerance can be confirmed through medical testing.
Symptoms can be similar between an IBS trigger or an intolerance, so your best bet is to be tested.
If you’re not lactose intolerant and you have IBS and dairy problems, this is a set of foods to add to your IBS trigger foods list.
Either way, dairy should be avoided, lucky for us, there are tons of fixes and dairy alternatives on the market today!

Soy milk can be found just as easily as milk, but it’s dairy free!
Soy milk comes in it’s original flavor, or you can enjoy vanilla or chocolate flavors.
Unfortunately, soy milk is less thick than milk, meaning, you have to do some extra math for your favorite recipes, or they become watery!
Not only is there soy milk on the market, but there are yogurts made from soy milk as well as ice cream.
Another downfall here, is that soy milk can cause excessive gas and bloating when not consumed in small amounts.
Soy milk works great for cereal, in tea/coffee and even in a smoothie, but I wouldn’t use it in my food recipes, the flavor doesn’t mesh well from my experience.
Almond milk products are by far my favorite, they have the best taste in my opinion.
IBS and dairy sensitive folks will love this one!
I feel like almond milk isn’t too far off from milk, making it easier to use for recipes and in everyday things like coffee, cereal and more.
One thing I was really missing for years before trying almond milk was chocolate milk.
I cut out milk and didn’t try another alternative for several years!!
Almond chocolate milk tastes exactly the same to me and I don’t have to worry about flaring IBS symptoms.
I use almond milk in smoothies a lot and have chocolate almond milk with my breakfast!
Almond milk ice cream also exists, which is super yummy!
I really like yogurts made with coconut milk, they have a good flavor and remind me of real dairy yogurt.
If you don’t care for coconut flavor, I wouldn’t recommend this type of milk, you can definitely taste the coconut in coconut milk.
Also if you’re allergic, don’t touch the stuff, that goes for any of these alternatives!
I think this milk pairs well with desserts and smoothies, but I’d never use it to cook dinner!
Coconut milk has a very strong, distinct taste and the consistency really reminds me of water, they use a lot of water in the mixture.
I’m referring to the carton versions of coconut milk by the way, not the canned coconut milk used in recipes.
But canned coconut milk is an awesome baking alternative to milk and dairy products.
I have yet to try hemp milk, but hemp is a super food, full of awesome nutrients!
Hemp milk is going to be a littler harder to find, as it’s not nearly as popular as soy, almond or coconut milk.
Hemp milk is a perfect addition to nutritious smoothies or shakes!
Rice milk has a bit of an odd taste to me, so I don’t typically purchase rice milk products.
I tried rice milk ice cream once and it was absolutely awful, yuck!!
I think this type of milk requires an acquired taste and isn’t for everyone.
It’s not too hard to find and might work nicely in recipes.

This book also includes gluten free options, if you’re sensitive to gluten.
This is a perfect book if you have IBS and dairy sensitivity!
Sometimes it’s nice to cut gluten out, some people with IBS have found it helpful.
